Before you climb a ladder to install your new fixture, remove any detachable parts from the existing light. Then, remove the decorative plate or canopy piece from the ceiling box and expose the capped wiring. Typically, there are three sets of wires present: the black or red current wires, the white neutral wires and the silver or copper ground wire. Using a non-contact voltage tester, test each wire for liveness. If you encounter any that show a red light, seek professional help.
If the old fixture was not color coded, choose the bare end of one of the black ceiling wires and connect it to the corresponding wire from your new fixture. Repeat for the other black fixture wire and the white wires. Next, connect the bare ends of the black and white wires from the fixture to the white and black wires in the ceiling box by twisting on a wire connector. Extend the stranded fixture wire about 1/8 in. past the solid wire before connecting to the connector to prevent it from clogging the threads and preventing a secure grip.
