Cree Agricultural Led Light Technology

Agricultural LED lights are built to withstand the toughest environments, from corrosive sulfur and salt spraying to vibration and impact. They are also designed to save energy, reducing maintenance and power costs.

Energy Efficiency

A key challenge in horticulture is keeping energy costs low. Labor and energy costs account for 60 percent of the cost of running an indoor farm, and rising energy prices are threatening to further increase the startup costs needed to launch and scale these innovative ventures. The good news is that new LED technology can help growers save energy while maximizing yields.

This is possible because LEDs are more efficient than traditional lamps in the horticulture lighting market, with lower power consumption and superior spectral output. They also enable growers to fine-tune light spectra and intensity to specific plant needs, improving their ability to maximize production. Combined with the industry’s best sulfur resistance, Cree LEDs can operate in demanding greenhouse environments and deliver longer operational lifespans for better reliability.

The latest generation of XLamp XP-E2 Photo Red and Far Red LEDs is optimized for horticulture, with up to 68 percent higher performance than the competition. This improvement in efficiency is made possible by a new generation of red phosphors, which feature narrow emission peaks that efficiently “pumps” blue light into the red spectrum.

These new phosphors, combined with a patented design for the red LED chip, result in a horticulture LED that delivers game-changing efficacy and a payback of less than one year. The result is an industrial LED luminaire that can reduce the time it takes to get a crop up and growing while freeing farmers from the burden of high startup costs and limited space.

Longevity

With the right care and attention, LEDs can last a long time. However, factors like initial conditions, operating temperature and electrical current draw can influence how quickly they degrade to an unusable state. Because of this, there are naturally occurring statistical variations in the lifetime of an LED sample population. These variations can be used to create a prediction model that provides engineers with an estimate of the average expected lifetime under a specific set of circumstances.

Durability

Horticultural LED grow lights emit a mix of colors that farmers can alter at different stages to stimulate attributes like photosynthesis, size, shape, nutritional content, juiciness and flavor. The new horticulture LEDs feature a more compact package, allowing them to be placed up to 40% closer to crops and provide better uniformity. They also use innovative free-form silicone encapsulants that produce a wide distribution, which helps to maximize shelving space in vertical farms and improve lighting efficiency. The new beam shapes also allow for better coverage of the crop canopy. Combined with industry-leading sulfur and corrosion resistance, these new products are built to thrive in demanding greenhouse environments.

Safety

Agricultural vehicles are exposed to harsh conditions, and it’s important that their lights are durable enough to stand up to the elements. LED lighting systems are ideal for farm equipment because they’re highly energy efficient, durable and long-lasting. They also reduce noise and can be easily installed without requiring any major modifications to the vehicle. They can be mounted on the bumper, grille, surface mounts, ROPS (rollbar/rollover protection structure), headlights and rear lights of any agricultural vehicle.

Cree LED’s latest bulb, a dimmable 60-watt replacement, is 843 lumens bright — a touch brighter than advertised and plenty bright enough to qualify as a good alternative to a standard 60-watt incandescent. And the light’s low power draw, at 10 watts for three hours of use per day, will add no more than a buck to your electric bill each year, which is much less than a conventional 60-watt incandescent would cost over the same period.

However, the company’s recent sales have been shaky, with owner Smart Global Holding Inc reporting revenue declines of more than 50% in this past quarter to $55.6 million. The company hasn’t given up, though, and is continuing to innovate with new products. They include a range of LEDs for displays and general lighting, as well as horticulture and outdoor lighting applications. These LEDs feature a full spectrum to mimic natural sunlight, and deliver high levels of photosynthetic photon flux (PPF) in the wavelengths most beneficial to plants.
